Orthokeratology molds your vision during sleep, like wearing retainers for your teeth, so you can truly appreciate the brushstrokes of morning when you wake up.
ENVISION THIS – How It Works
Orthokeratology (Ortho-K for short; or better known as overnight contact lenses) temporarily reshapes the cornea to reduce refractive errors such as near-sightedness (myopia) and astigmatism. The contact lenses are worn while you sleep and are removed when you wake up to better vision. The painless, non-surgical treatment uses the many unique curvatures of the molded lenses, which float on your eye tear film, providing therapeutic pressure thus reshaping the cornea.
FORESEEING, FOR SEEING – What Happens Next?
After a night of wearing Ortho-K lenses, your reshaped cornea can refocus light onto the retina, resulting in clearer vision right till bedtime. This means going to work, exercising and even swimming without the need of glasses or daytime contact lenses. As our cornea is flexible, if the lenses are not worn, the cornea will revert to its original shape. Ortho-k may take up to 14 days when first worn to reshape the cornea. Day by day, vision will be better till cornea is molded to its best possible shape, achieving maximum vision correction.
I SPY WITH MY LITTLE EYES – Who Can Be A Candidate?
Orthokeratology is FDA-approved and is even safe for children as young as 6. It is especially beneficial for younger children who likely experience sudden increase in myopia every year. Globally, many kids have undertaken this gentle vision-shaping programme because it has proved to reduce or eliminate the progression of myopia.
There is no upper limit on age either. It is a great option for athletes, fire fighters, or adults whose vocations do not encourage or allow eyewear. Recent technological and manufacturing technical breakthroughs now make it possible to correct low to high myopia, hyperopia (long-sightedness), and astigmatism. Unfortunately, there is still a small percentage of people who are not suitable to wear Ortho-K lenses. The complexity of the corneal shape and the rigidity of the cornea itself are unique to each individual, and the results definitely vary.
TIME TO REFLECT ON COUNTERING REFRACTION – Why Else You Should Try Ortho-K Today!
Many have concerns about wearing contact lenses overnight but studies have shown that the safety of wearing Ortho-K lenses at night is akin to wearing soft contact lenses in the day. For the best Ortho-K treatment, there is a need for good compliance from practitioners, the wearers, and if children are involved – the parents.
Like any form of contact lenses, it is normal for a person to have an awareness of the Ortho-K lenses in their eyes. However, you will not feel the lenses when you sleep and there is no sense of physical corneal change. Also, it does not hurt as lid-lens interaction is kept at a reduced 8-hour cycle instead of a full day of 12 hours or more. Moreover, as Ortho-K lenses are larger, they do not move as much as typical lenses.
Orthokeratology requires a great deal of technical skill, specialised equipment and considerably more office time. It is easier for practitioners to offer glasses, normal contact lenses, or surgery to correct vision. But the service expected from such programme would be highly dedicated, not to mention modifiable.
